Week 1 of the rest of my life
I'm sure you were all just dying of anticipation to see how my first week at work was. And I would love to tell you in detail, but at the moment, I'm exhausted. It's not that I'm particularly sleepy....I just feel drained!
Melbourne was good...but tiring. For starters, they had us up at 6AM and the programmes officially ended at 11:30PM. So by the time we got back to our hotels (we got the cruddier hotel by the way), showered and prepared for bed it was at least 12AM. It was a bit of a blast from the past actually, because I ended up rooming with Vanessa, a friend from school. It's funny- there are some people that I haven't seen at all since I left high school 5 years ago, but for some reason, my path and Vanessa's path have always converged some how, be it through work (ahhh, Myer) or through our parents (our dads are doctors). (Anyway, she reads this blog, so I expect you to come out of the woodwork and put a comment on this post!).
One thing I felt a bit uncomfortable with was the whole self-congratulatory aspect of the induction. The presenters were all "Yaaaaaay! KPM&!!" which got a bit sickeningly sweet sometimes...and it wasn't only the company big-wigs. It was the other people they paid (e.g. Bell Shakespeare) to get their message across (I couldn't help thinking that the Bell Shakespeare Co was compromising their artistic integrity by accepting a paid gig to spruke a big corporate...). Bemusing on the whole. Oh, and also bemusing was the amount of obligatory small talk. There were a few sessions where they sat us with random people who you'd talk to because they were there, but as soon as it was time to mingle, you never talked to those people again. What's the point I say! Oh, did someone say "networking"?? =p
But there were highlights...L@uren Burns (tae-kwon-do gold medallist) and her super polished speech (she's definitely given that speech a few hundred times...she must have fine tuned it down to an art!), Lano and Woodley dropping a tennis ball onto my table at dinner and the ball knocking over a glass of red into a partner's lap...Emily from Australian Idol singing for us (she has an amazing voice but I would not pay to see her...she's another Casey- nothing to say)....beating my little heart out on my african drum at our drumming workshop!
The weekend in Melbourne was pretty good too....went to their DFO and got a shirt and a top (both work, unfortunately) and a Spencer & Rutherford bag (work as well, but funky!).
And since we've been back at the office, we've been in training...but this arvo got my first piece of work! Nothing exciting though...just the usual trawling through the net to research whatever. And as usual...could only find one thing. Aiiiii!
The scary thing is that apparently it's supposedly quiet in the office at the moment...but NO ONE leaves at the designated 5:15PM. This does not bode well...

What?! KPMG hired Aust Idols to sing for you?! Wtf?! So so sooo strange!
I watched this documentary on Walmart whilst in HK (DVD) - about the operation of this mega company and also on its staff ethics, the whole morales thing...sounds a bit like KPMG. Lol! It's weird...but I'm sure it does have some kinda effect.
Glad to know you had a great time in Melbourne (and that you now are a proud owner of a Spencer & Rutherford bag =P)!!
Judith - as you can see I've put up a link to the said song. Apparently it was commissioned by the German arm of the firm, which kind of figures if you consider their World Idol entrant (remember?...."She's a MANIAC! MAAAANIAC!").
Phoebe - I looove my bag! Have lunch with me and I shall bring it along to introduce you! hehehehe
Hi Em & Judith :)
I can't believe you looked up where our KPMG song came from AND the real version of it after listning to my jungle remix version of it :) Anyway I am out of the woodworks now and will comment reguarly (or whilst having having no work/training to attend to). Hopefully I get to see this funky bag of yours tomorrow...funny how you're just around the corner from me at work, yet a majority of my dept leaves at 515 (or earlier) whilst your dept is still hard at work!!!
OMG, today I had to stick around cos I had something on at church at 7...so I was doing stuff til 6:15. It was 6:45 when I left and people were STILL plugging away....freaks!!
