Vignettes

Do we really need Explode?
Explode is a Dolly/Girlfriend type magazine for guys. Considering the average age of a guy in the target market is probably about 13 or 14, I was appalled at the fact that there was a pretty young model on the cover of the magazine dressed in a skimpy little swimsuit, along with headlines about learning to drive and the latest video games. Honestly, do we REALLY need to provide any more encouragement for young guys to treat women as sexual objects?!? We already have FHM and Ralph etc for older guys who want to ogle girls like pieces of meat. I mean, I accept that these magazines exist and that guys like looking at pretty girls. Fair enough. But to market something like that to young guys just seems to me like you're asking for trouble by starting the whole "pretty girls as sexual objects" mentality a bit too young.

(Omg, I just surfed onto the magazine website. They have this section called "Your Mate's Big Sister", where they encourage readers to submit pics of the "Big Sister" of said "Mate" they have been most recently fantasising about. Or teacher, or fish and chip shop lady. Tasteful, huh?) The media is just so full of crap these days! And what sort of parent would allow their kid to buy such magazines anyway!?!?

Unexpected connections
I had 2 good conversations with people I don't usually talk that deeply with on Friday! Considering that I find myself in a stage of life where opportunities to make good new friends are few and far between, I felt blessed. Especially since one of them was with someone I don't usually find myself connecting with. Happy to be a listening ear people! (Except if you're a psycho client wasting my time by keeping me on the line just so you can talk to someone. There are professionals who will listen to you then. I am not one of them, nor are my colleagues at the legal centre!)

No sap, no crap
I'm SO NOT sentimental in the "ooh-ing and ahhh-ing" gushy way. I'm just not. It's not that I can't appreciate stuff that's cute. I just don't go on and on about it! On Friday, a client brought these 3 tiny little Shitzu-cross-Maltese puppies in. (So small in fact, that one of the slightly daft solicitors thought they were guinea pigs from a distance.) Just about EEEEEVERYONE was gushing over how CUTE the dogs were and rushing over to hold them and blah blah blah.

Me? I saw the dogs, noted their cuteness, and continued what I was doing before. Which was kind of hard, because I had been on the way to talk to a solicitor about a client, but she was otherwise engaged in cooing over dogs. Bah.

And I know I said a few posts back that I would give 3 month's grace to gushing new couples, but I just can't stand it. I don't CARE what you do or say in private. But when your obvious affection spills over into the public arena of your MSN nickname and picture, it makes my insides squirm. As I remarked in my previous post, maybe I'm just bitter and twisted. I'd like to think not though. I get that you're happy. I'm even happy for you! I just don't like to have stuff like that waved in my face...it's uncomfortable! *squirms*

Love your blog about Friday. I totally know what you mean. You know you're the first random uni person I talked to in first year. I still remember we were @ the Matthews lecture halls, waiting to go in for either QMA or Micro lecture...like the very first one, and you talked to me, and it was like...wow! And then it turned out you went to MLC! And that you knew Anna! And you did law as well!!!! Hahaha. I'm heaps heaps glad to have the chance to get to know you better, and you've been a great train buddy (when I manage to catch your train...:P)! I mean, who lives @ H'ville?! It's so totally bizarre...it must be fate or some unknown force working!

Hey hey - I don't understand what I need to do for the blog tag from your last blog.

As your regular commenter who hasn't commented regularly lately, I have come to comment.

I just have the one question though.

Question: Can I go home yet?
