The problem with long lost friends when your life is deconstructing
Last weekend I met and caught up with sooo many people I hadn't seen for years. If that wasn't enough, I saw most of the aforementioned people twice at 2 separate events over the weekend! Talk about a blast from the past...
When you haven't seen people for a long time, it's hard to encapsulate your life into a few short minutes.
They say "So, Em, what have you been up to??"
and I say "I'm in my final semester of uni...not really doing much...working at the legal centre and at CBA.."
and they go "Oh, that's nice." (Or that's the gist anyway.)
2 issues arise.
1) That's really all I have going for me in my life at the moment. That's all that is worthy of note. Actually, it's not even worthy of note. Oh dear. The consequence of this is that conversation becomes incredibly stilted because...well...I haven't raised anything new to talk about! Conversation peters out.
2) The other note worthy stuff (like what's going on....or, heh, NOT going on) at church at the moment, is just not stuff you dump onto poor unsuspecting people you haven't talked to in 1-3 years. Actually, I did try this in one of the conversations, and it was just WEIRD. It was even WORSE in this context because the people I met were all ex-church friends who were obviously going to ask how church is going for me. (In case you didn't pick up the vibe, church isn't going too well. But that is another post. Sigh.)
Ergh. The moral of the story is, next time I meet a whole bunch of old friends in one big onslaught, my life will be beautiful and shiny and bright and exciting! Then we'll have something to talk about that isn't quite so depressing and/or uncomfortable.

Well going home today, I met Penny (MLC - not legal, good god thank god not legal) at Townhall and she walked by, and I said "Penny!" and we talked until I got off at Strathfield. Blast from the past there.
We were talking about bumping into people and our lack of memory of names and she said "hey, well you remembered mine".
hehe
