Careers according to high-achieving law-school-graduating sorts
I'm slowly coming to realise that because most of the people I hang out with are high-achieving law-school-graduating sorts (HALSGS's, if you will), my perspective on a few uni-student related things is really skewed, and what I think is normal isn't really normal at all.
Firstly, the concept of long hours. There was a time at the legal centre when someone (a non-lawyer) remarked in relation to a friend's ex-employer: "And they expected her to work til 9PM most days!! That's crazy!!"
At the time I thought to myself "Hmm. 9PM. That's not TOO bad..." And then I conferred with all the HALSGS's, and realised that we were all thinking the same thing.
Secondly, the concept of a graduate job. Lots of people know that I'm still at uni, but have a graduate job at KPM&, but they think I'm working there now. Yes, even people who are doing Commerce degrees at our uni. A graduate job is a job you start after you graduate. I thought that everyone - or every student at least - would know what these things are. I mean, it's why most of us are going to uni, isn't it?? Which brings me to my next point...
Thirdly, the concept of actually applying for said graduate jobs. Again, because all my friends are, I thought everyone applied for these things! But then...if you don't know they exist, how can you apply for them! Strange!
Suffice to say that not everyone I meet will come from the same background as me, and I would be well advised to remember that...
