Heavier Things
My dad is a doctor. This morning when I came down to breakfast, he announced that 1 in 4 people in the UK are obese. He then proceeded to tell me about this new procedure for people with morbid obesity (something about putting a band around the entrance to your stomach, so that it's hard to get the food into your tummy and you feel full quicker). The conversation proceeded like this:
Me: [joking] Hey, maybe I should get that!
Dad: Don't be silly, it's only for people who are morbidly obese! That's having a Body-Mass Index of 30 or over. [He pauses, looking at me.] I'd estimate your BMI is probably about......28.
Me: [silence]
Dad: Yeah, I should have calculated it properly when you were at the surgery last.
Me: [Makes mental note to never visit the surgery again.]
Then later today...
(The scene is set in the family living room, where my mum is unpacking her things having returned from her overseas trip.)
Mum: [Pulling a pair of shoes from her bag] Oh, and try these on! They might be a bit small...
Me: [Trying on shoes] Yeah these are quite nice! But a bit tight.
Dad: [From the lounge where he was dozing] If you lose weight, they won't be so tight!!
Me: OMG, THEY ARE FEET FOR GOODNESS' SAKE!!
Dad: You should lose weight!
.....
Sigh.
[Edit: Hey, I just calculated my BMI, and it's 23. Hmph.]

HAHAHAHAHA
Poor you! I hate it when my family tells me I've gotten fatter! (Usually my grandma....and usually near the end of my HK visits....) It's like, thanks for pointing out the obvious, but you don't need to rub it in!
Yes well take a read of how my dad is lovely to me.
We went to airport to pick up mum. Mum's friend's husband was also there.
The husband looked at me and said "she looks a lot like you" to dad.
Dad replied: "Yes, she needed to have taken after her mum to look pretty but she took after me so she looks like that".
I felt warm and fuzzy. I am so loved.
Wow, my father is bad, but at least he never comments on my BMI.
Poor Em.
(actually, i'm going to write my comment in a post.)
hahaha...Dad sees patients day in day out, I don't think he can help commenting!
