Dated!! =p (9/9)

If your opinion on a subject is dependent on your taste, then how can there be a definitive opinion on the subject? After all, there's as many tastes and subsequent opinions as there are people, right?

Aaaaanyway, the reason I bring this up is because when I met up with the songwriting dude today (he's supposed to be teaching me stuff, but I don't believe I've gained a whole lot so far!- at least it was free again, whoohooo!), I played him 2 other songs I'd done, and at the conclusion of the lesson, his advice to me was "The songs that you write sound a little dated. Try listening to more current music and basing your songs around them."

ARGH!

I don't think they sound dated! Dated and using I, I/III, IIm, III, IIIm, IV, V, VIm, V/VII and bV in different combinations are totally different things! Hehehehe.

But seriously, I don't want to be unteachable or not open to constructive criticism, but what might sound dated to one, doesn't necessarily to another. So what if one of my songs is similar to The Piano Man!? (It doesn't really- just the chord progression.) I LIKE The Piano Man!! In any other context it would be an honour to have a song of mine compared to such a classic! =p. And to make matters worse, the time he gave me a chord progression to work with, it sounded totally 80's to me...!! Grrrrr. I'm too Asian to say anything which might be construed as impolite.

Oh, also got to hear a recording of the girl who's gonna sing my song- she has a nice voice- kinda sounds a bit like me except better! hehehe. Not incredibly down with the chords he has changed, but maybe that is because I'm used to hearing them differently. Or maybe because I used those chords because I chose them specifically to have them there and it sounds wrong without them!?!?!?! Heh.

Argh! I don't want to be anal, but these songs (except for the ones where I set out to say "Ok, I am writing a song purely for the sake of it") are a part of me!! They are my babies!!! Hehehehheee.
