Happy Valentine's Day
(Firstly, sorry about the length between updates you 6 readers of my blog. I wanted to make sure everyone got a chance to participate in my poll! Not that it helped to garner more responses or anything. To everyone who responded, thank you! To everyone who didn't, head over to that post and place a comment there now!)
Valentine's Day is a stupid tradition concocted by retaillers to try and guilt-trip and compel couples into dragging the stores out of their post-Christmas-sales slump, and hence it's never intrinsically meant anything to me. So the first year I actually had someone to "be my Valentine" (puke!) in 2002, I was all, "No, don't get me anything! It doesn't mean anything! Yeah we'll do dinner some other time. Of course you don't need to get me flowers!" (Actually, I sell myself short. I actually did care a little bit- to the extent that I tried to get out of work that night since it fell on a Thursday, but I was unsuccessful which to me was no biggie.)
Anyway, when I did my shift at work, EVERYONE, but EEEVERYONE was carrying around a bunch of flowers, most of them massive. Even the girl I was working with who had no boyfriend got a bunch from one of her friends (and she deigned to give me a single small bloom from her massive bunch because she saw that I didn't have any. I can't remember how I felt about that at the time....touched or spewing. I forget. Could have gone either way.) And on the train home....EVERYONE, but EEEEVERYONE (well...every woman) was carrying a bunch of flowers! I was feeling so crap and unloved by this stage you wouldn't believe, and have provided gentle reminders for flowers from bf ever since then.
So it's not like V-day actually means anything to me. It's just the fact that eeeveryone else is doing something that makes me hanker after some affectionate gestures.
Well, the 2 V-days after the one I just mentioned left a little to be desired in their own floral way (2003- he didn't get me flowers at all- I think I put up a annoyed post about it which you can still see if you want...can't be bothered to hyperlink it though; and 2004- he got me flowers 2 weeks early, thinking it was V-day on the day he turned up at my doorstep.)
But today was nice! I thought it was going to be another non-gestural V-day, but I ended up with a bunch of roses (which bf and a friend got by driving out to the flower markets at 4am...!! Although don't think they are totally 100% altruistic, they wanted to go fishing afterwards and needed an early start!), an (unwritten in) card and a nice lunch at Epoch (mmm...mussels!). Oh, and a spot of Simpson's Road Rage in the morning =)
Anyway, I really enjoyed it...and it's nice to know we are moving on from strength to strength in terms of V-day celebrations! Hehehehehe.
Love you lots! =)

I was on the "it's so commerical and meaningless, just another marketing ploy to guilt couples into cliched and generally overpriced gestures" bandwagon and never thought Valentines Day was anything special....until a bunch of flowers was delivered to my door yesterday morning.
All I can say is I'm now hooked. I could really get used to this! And I'm glad he had the sense not to send me red roses, teddy bears, heart shaped chocolates or anything equally mushy:)
