Thought provoking classes...what next!?

Of all the classes I'm taking this session (Immigration, Litigation 2, Family Law and Law and Social Theory), I was really dreading Law and Social Theory and the domain of wanky verbose Arts students. We study all these philosophers (Marx, Weber [pronounced Vay-ber...good thing they can't hear your pronunciation when they're making papers!], some other person who escapes me...) and what their conception of the law was like, you see. Plus, I'm an absolute nigel (man, haven't used that word for aaaages) and have no one to talk to and am thus condemned to listen. AND everyone who did it last session hated it.

Anyway, today we actually did work and got this introduction to Modernity. Now apparently in this period, philosophers were all about challenging the church and God and advocating choice and thought and human sovereignty- and they called this breakaway from the church the "enlightenment". Interestingly, the lecturer was talking about how this meant that humans were now able to construct their own realities and identities and how these guys believed that human reasoning could produce freedom for the human race.

You only need to take a look around at the world now to see that they were wrong...

Hmm. It's such an age old story- humans don't like being told what to do by God. And then when God is rejected, things screw up. Honestly, we think we are free...but on so many levels the human race is enslaved- to what other people think, to money and wealth and success, to ambition, to fears...Humans are so flawed- how could flawed human reasoning possibly be able to produce a way out of all this slavery to freedom? It's ridiculous! It's the blind leading the blind!

To reiterate Rick Warren in the Purpose Driven Life, without God, life is meaningless. We're on a road to no where. We can't save ourselves.

Thank God for His grace!!
