Just a thought while passing through...
I have done 10 mins of study today and it's quarter past two. O help help help....
BUT that wasn't the thought. Here is it below:
I was listening to the Hot 30 the other day when driving home from the hospital, and the content got me thinking. Sop, you can answer this one (or anyone else with knowledge on the subject): do people in the media see any particular moral obligation attached to their role? If so, what sort?
Reason being, the average age of a Hot 30 listener would be...I dunno, 14-15 years old. Possibly younger. And here are the hosts (Kyle and Jackie O) ranting on about their sex lives and who in the office they've slept with and flirting by sms and all this absolute rubbish. What are kids supposed to think?? WHY are they talking about their sex lives on national radio when they know that young kids will be listening??? How can this possibly be a good thing for those kids?? Remember when I was talking about Dr Phil the other day (September 18) when these young girls were talking about the havoc that having sex early had created in their lives...surely the attitudes of people like Kyle and Jackie O which are blatantly splashed across the airwaves are exacerbating the situation by treating sex like it's no big deal. I am zeroing in on them here, but heck, editors and publishers of Cleo and Cosmo also know that their average readership would be about the same age, and yet they persist in publishing articles on how to be good in bed and blah blah blah (e.g. some of the headlines from the current Cosmo: "Are you clitorally dependent?" and "Out there sex-lives!"). Maybe I'm naive....but does a 15 year old really need to know that????
Coming back to my initial question....DO THEY CARE?? Do these high falutin media types CARE about what kind of effect they're having on teens?? Argh, it's driving me nuts (almost as much as those STUPID REMOTE CONTROL CARS ARE!! NEIGHBOURS ARE AT IT AGAIN!!!!!!)
My guess is that they don't give a crap. That they justify it by saying that that's the way the world is now, this is the stuff kids are asking for, we are just responding to the demand.
How sad.
I could go on and on, but will refrain. Ergh, it pisses me off though!!
